Femtosecond and sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses from a SASE-based free-electron laser

چکیده
We propose a novel method to generate femtosecond and sub-femtosecond photon pulses in a freeelectron laser by selectively spoiling the transverse emittance of the electron beam. Its merits are simplicity and ease of implementation. When the system is applied to the Linac Coherent Light Source, it can provide x-ray pulses the order of 1 femtosecond in duration containing about 1010 transversely coherent photons. †[email protected] ‡On leave from Deutches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), Hamburg, Germany.

Terawatt-scale sub-10-fs laser technology – key to generation of GW-level attosecond pulses in X-ray free electron laser Abstract We propose a technique for the production of attosecond X-ray pulses which is based on the use of X-ray SASE FEL combined with a femtosecond laser system. A few-cycle optical pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser interacts with the electron beam in a two-period undulator re...
متن کاملX-ray Pulse Duration Control in the LCLS
X-ray pulse duration control is critical to exploring the ultra-fast science at an x-ray freeelectron laser (FEL) facility such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The pulse length of a typical electron bunch that drives a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL is limited to the order of 100~200 fs, due to short-bunch collective interactions. Many novel schemes have been proposed...

Pump-probe experiments combining pulses from a X-ray FEL and an optical femtosecond laser are very attractive for sub-picosecond time-resolved studies. Since the synchronization between the two independent light sources to an accuracy of 100 fs is not yet solved, it is proposed to derive both femtosecond radiation pulses from the same electron bunch but from two insertion devices. This eliminat...

Continuing technical advances in the creation of (sub-) femtosecond VUV and X-ray pulses with Free-Electron Lasers and laser-based high-harmonic-generation sources have created new opportunities for studying ultrafast dynamics during chemical reactions. Here, we present an approach to image the geometric structure of gas-phase molecules with fewfemtosecond temporal and sub-Ångström spatial reso...

Focusing an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) pulse into a gas target, a plasma of transiently core excited ions can be created within a few femtoseconds, building a pathway to an inner-shell keV atomic x-ray laser. Varying the XFEL parameters, a wide variety of pulse structures can be created with comparable peak-intensities to XFELs: isolated pulses of sub-femtosecond duration, trains of pulse...
